    Notes:

22 Mar 2001 - Reference page 101 in the Medlam PDF Files. Colin in his younger days was a suitor for the hand of a lady of great beauty, the daughter of MacDonell of Ardnabee in Glengarry. So were Colin's cousin Fraser of Culbokie and Coll MacDonell of Barrisdale. The lady favoured Barrisdale but the father favoured Culbokie because he was richer. eventually she married Fraser of Culbokie and bore him nine sons and five daughters. This left Barrisdale and Colin to seek a bride elsewhere. Both of them were suitors for the hand of Helen, daughter of Grant of Glenmoriston. While both were on a visit to her father's house, a ride in the braes was proposed. When about to start, it was found that the lady's mounting chair had not yet been provided. Barrisdale with characteristic politeness entered the house to obtain one. Colin lifted the non-reluctant damsel in his arms and placed her in the saddle. Glenmoristen, looking on and judging from this incident the direction in which the feelings of his daughter lay, cried out "Colin, the lass is yours."

22 Mar 2001 - John commanded about 200 Clansmen at the Battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715. Roderick XXI was Chief and was present but did not take command as he was too young. At that time John and Roderick had signed a loyal address to George I of England on his accession in 1714 but as this address was ignored they and many other Highland Chiefs fought against the Georgian forces in 1715.

In 1727 Alexander Chisholm of Muckerach redeemed the Strathglass and other lands forefeited by Roderick XXI after the Battle of Sheriffmuir. In 1728 he made over to John(2) for 12,000 merks, the Knockfin and Buntait lands, which had been forefeited.

21 Mar 2001 - Tradition in Strathglass gives Colin I of Knockfin the credit for having started the droving of cattle from the Highlands to markets in the south. He made a modest fortune buying cattle from his neighbours, then extended his interests by buying cattle wherever he could find them. By 1678 he had amassed enough money to finance, to the extent of 12,000 merks, his brother Alexander XIX when he succeeded to the Chiefship in 1678.

Tradition also has it that the Camerons and the MacMillans of Lochaber banded together with the intention of invading lands of the Chisholm and rustling their cattle. It was Colin I of Knockfin who decided to do battle and resist this injustice. He disposed his Clansmen in a masterly manner in order to pour their bullets into both the front and the flank of the attackers. Despite the attackers further rally, the Chisholms were able to charge and by early afternoon the Chisholms had won the day. In their retreat, some of the Lochaber men met an old woman trying to conceal a small boy. She entreated them not to hurt the child as he was the son of Chisholm of Knockfin. The raiders agreed to take care of him and hoisted him saying in Gaelic "Don't worry, he is the safest tunic I can get." The old woman was naturally alarmed but was told to follow quietly. As the men passed out of the Quisachan woods the child was restored to her, none the worse for having been in the hands of the former enemy.

These lands had previously been sequestered by James IV for certain debts owing to the Crown by Wiland XII. In return Wiland resigned any rights of property he may have had in the Earldome of Ross to the King who held that Earldome at that time. All these lands lay in Strathglass. In the same year, James V granted to Hugh Lord Fraser the lands and barony of Erchless.

In 1555 Mary Queen of Scots granted to John Earl of Sutherland the land in Comar belonging to the deceased John XVI, probably as collateral security for a loan.
