  • Notes
    • 12 Mar 2001 - Fr. Johnston in the History of the Catholic Church in Eastern Nova Scotia on page 220 gave some personal details. He was ordained in Scotland at Easter, 1808, by Bishop John Chisholm at Lismore, Scotland. After his ordination he took charge of the Mission at Kintail where he served for approx three years. He suffered from bad health in both Scotland and Nova Scotia.

On page 188 in the History of Inverness County it was stated that he came to America in 1811. At that time there was no resident clergyman of any creed between Cheticamp and the Strait of Canso. On coming to Judique in 1818 he took up his abode at Indian Point where lived his cousin, Thomas "Ban" MacDonell. Rev. MacDonell remainded in Judique for 25 years and died at his home at Indian Point. By 1823 there were two Catholic Priests in Inverness County; Rev. MacDonell and Rev. Blanchette in Cheticamp.

15 May 2001 - Reference page 220 in the History of the Catholic Church in Eastern Nova Scotia where his parents names are given.

16 May 2001 - Various references in the History of the Catholic Church in Eastern Nova Scotia indicate that Rev. MacDonell was grossly overweight and this fact limited pastoral visits, certainly in the winter months. On page 123, Vol 2, it was stated that the people of Judique headed by Rev. MacDonell suggested the County be called Inverness. This suggestion was submitted to the House of Assembly by William Young who represented the County from 1836 to 1859. The name of Inverness County came into effect in 1837. See page 124, Vol 2, for exact date of Rev. MacDonell's death.

19 May 2001 - The names of his parents were confirmed on page 51, Vol 2, in the History of Antigonish by Ray MacLean; Hugh MacDonell & Mary Chisholm.

23 May 2001 - His Headstone in the Older part of the Judique Cemetery gave his year of birth and that he was born in Knockfin but no death details.
