    • 31 Mar 2001 - Reference pages 235, 236 & 242 in the Medlam PDF Files. Dr. John followed a career dedicated to the profession of medicine. He graduated from South Carolina Medical College in 1850 and then studied at several European Universities. In 1858 he became Professor of Surgery at his old College. During the Civil War he tended the Confederate wounded at Fort Sumter. After the war in 1869 he moved to Baltimore as professor of operative surgery and held appointment of Dean of the Faculty 1869/1874. This gave him the opportunity of writing his text book entitled "Manuel of Military Surgery." In 1877 he founded the Presbyterian Ear Nose and Throat Hospital in Baltimore and in 1887 chaired the Ophthalmologist section of the International Medical Congress.

      He received his medical degree from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1850 and later continued his studies in London, Milan and Paris (1859). During the Crimean War he studied treatment techniques in European hospitals. During the American Civil War he attended the wounded at Fort Sumter.
