BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Joanne Young Brophy, 87, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, in Bloomington, following a short illness.

She was born Aug. 15, 1927, in West Rutland, Vermont, to the late Florence (Mullen) and James Young. Joanne graduated from West Rutland High School and received a bachelor's degree in geology from Barnard College in New York City.

She married the late Gerald Patrick Brophy in 1951 and worked in the education department of the New York Museum of Natural History while Gerry completed his doctoral work. Joanne and Gerry moved to Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1954, following Gerry's appointment to a faculty position in the geology department at Amherst College.

For many years she enjoyed annual trips out west with her family to the Yellowstone-Bighorn Research Association geologic field station in Red Lodge, Montana, as well as to many far flung parts of the globe. A highlight of her life was living in Baghdad, Iraq, and Karachi, Pakistan, while Gerry pursued a Fulbright Teaching Fellowship.

Joanne's volunteer activities included being a docent for both Historic Deerfield in Deerfield, Massachusetts, and the Pratt Museum of Natural History at Amherst College. She also provided dedicated volunteer service to the Amherst Ballet School. She and Gerry enjoyed their later years together living at Applewood Retirement Community in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Joanne is survived by her son Thomas, wife Laura and granddaughter Katherine of Jeffersonville, Vermont, son James, wife Evelyn and granddaughter Jennifer of Bloomington, as well as granddaughter Sarah and her husband David Marks of Chicago, Illinois. Her eldest son William Michael predeceased her. Joanne is also survived by her brother Robert Young of Brunswick, Georgia.

A private service will be held in the spring in Amherst, Massachusetts, with burial at Wildwood Cemetery.
